DESCRIPTION:The Marathon County Historical Society presents "From Sawmills to Paper Mill: The Growth of Schofield\, Weston & Rothschild\," another topic in our History Speaks series. Join us for this presentation by Gary Gisselman at 2 p.m. Sunday\, Feb. 24\, 2019\, at the Woodson History Center\, 410 McIndoe St.\, Wausau. Entrepreneurs in the mid-to-late 1800s built sawmills along the Wisconsin River to turn the huge pine trees into lumber and shipped it to more populated areas. As the forests were depleted\, they found ways to change focus and use the scrap wood to make paper. Gisselman will trace the history of how the paper industry contributed to building stable and thriving communities on Wausau's southeast side. Gary Gisselman is the research librarian at the Marathon County Historical Society. There is no admission fee\; however\, donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.
