History Speaks: Puerto Rico After the Storm

Hurricane Maria caused devastation across Puerto Rico in September 2017. Learn more about current conditions when the Marathon County Historical Society presents “Puerto Rico After the Storm,” another topic in our History Speaks series, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Woodson History Center, 410 McIndoe St., Wausau. Speaker Rick Lohr traveled to Puerto Rico on a Road Scholar trip in January 2019. The trip emphasized the history and culture of Puerto Rico and that territory's relationship with the United States. He visited areas between San Juan and Ponce. Along the way he was able to get stories of some Puerto Ricans about surviving the 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria. He also got information on the effect of those storms on the social, political and economic structure of the islands. Rick Lohr is a public speaker on selected historical and environmental topics. Rick is a former world history teacher at Wausau West High and Newman High Schools. He has traveled widely throughout the world, and brings his experiences and insights to local audiences. There is no admission fee; however, donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.
