History Speaks in Stratford: Columbus and the new world

Europeans thought the world was flat until Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the Americas. Keith Montgomery will explore scientific changes that ensued during “Columbus and the new world: 16th century origins of the Scientific Revolution.” His presentation will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Zion Lutheran Church, 213501 Legacy St., Stratford. Second Ave., Stratford) This presentation is part of the History Speaks in Your Town series presented by the Marathon County Historical Society and the Continuing Education office of UW-Stevens Point at Wausau. European ideas about the structure of the world changed once Europeans began to understand the existence, location and magnitude of the Americas. Speaker Keith Montgomery will talk about how this opened up a new way of thinking about Earth and made possible the new world of scientific thought. Keith Montgomery, Ph.D., is a frequent speaker on central Wisconsin’s geology. He is a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and former Dean of UW-Marathon County and UW Colleges-North Region. This talk is free and open to the public. All donations are appreciated. Registration is not required.
